Movie Diary 10/20/2008

Waltz with Bashir (Ari Folman, 2008). Yes, now is the time to see movies Festival-mongers saw a few months ago. And this one succeeds as well as any other realistic (i.e., no animals or superheroes) feature-length animation I’ve seen. (full review TBD)

Changeling (Clint Eastwood, 2008). Initially it’s an excuse to portray an officialdom so accustomed to lying they don’t know how to do anything else–although this rhyme with Eastwood’s Flags of Our Fathers fades in favor of straight-ahead melodrama. (full review 10/24)

Movie Diary 10/19/2008

Airplane! (Abrahams/Zucker/Zucker, 1980). Just because. “You can tell me, I’m a doctor.”

Empire (Paul Pfeiffer, 2004). Currently running at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, this three-month-long digital projection presents the construction of a wasp’s nest–unedited. It runs 24 hours a day. Aside from the fact that I liked looking at it, there’s the peculiar feeling of knowing (if you happen to be standing alone in the frequently empty gallery) that you’re the only person who will see this particular sequence in the process.

Tru Loved (Stewart Wade, 2008). Indie gay movie about the customary indie-gay-movie things. (full review 10/24)
