Coco Before Chanel (Anne Fontaine, 2009). Audrey Tautou, looking drawn and severe, plays the future great fashion designer, in a sort of La vie en rose for the couture set. But light, really light. Same kind of dreary biography, but without the good songs. Refreshingly even-handed treatment of a roguish aristocrat, played by Benoit Poelvoorde. (full review 10/16)
Theodora Goes Wild (Richard Boleslawski, 1936). Irene Dunne as the small-town lady with a secret life as a slightly scandalous novelist. Dunne has so many great moments in this thing it almost doesn’t matter how good the rest of it is, but the rest of it is pretty good.
