Movie Diary 3/4/2009

Rem Koolhaas: A Kind of Architect (Markus Heidingsfelder and Min Tesch, 2008). A rush through Koolhaas’s career, including a youthful period as a screenwriter in a Dutch collective that included future Speed director Jan de Bont. What does this have to do with the design of the Seattle Public Library? Unknown, but the movie plays next week as part of the Northwest Film Forum’s “By Design” festival. (full review 3/6)

luckystar2Lucky Star (Frank Borzage, 1929). A thoroughly created rural world comes to life in Borzage’s studio-rendered story of a physically damaged WWI vet (Charles Farrell) and the scruffy country girl (Janet Gaynor) he comes home to. The subtle playing of the two leads amidst the wonders of the Fox set (still under the spell of Murnau’s tenure there), hits exactly the right pitch.
