Movie Diary 5/18/2009

A scene from Terminator Salvation.

Terminator Salvation (McG, 2009). I’m going to need my abacus to keep the time-space continuum stuff straight. Until then, let’s point out that this one is grim, grim, grim. That isn’t really a photo from the movie. See Giant Claw, below. (full review 5/21)

Departures (Yojiro Takita, 2008). The Oscar-winner for best foreign language film is indeed the kind of movie that wins that award, but it’s also a little better than that, too. (Screens at Seattle International Film Festival on 5/22 and 5/24)

The Giant Claw (Fred F. Sears, 1957). Crap, this one’s bad even if you’re talking about bad cinema: stock footage mixed in with a few scenes of people talking in offices and lots of model shots of a giant bird from outer space. And this was a year after Sears directed Earth vs. the Flying Saucers; how quickly the mighty fall.
