Movie Diary 8/12/2009

City Girl (F.W. Murnau, 1930). It’s not a masterpiece, but it sure is a beauty – the lone surviving Murnau film between Sunrise and Tabu. Periodically erupts with great shots and set-ups: busy city restaurant, the elevated train running past the title character’s apartment, two lovers gamboling through a wheatfield upon arrival at the family homestead. With its appearance on last year’s Murnau/Borzage box set, surely this will become a better-known silent title.
