Movie Diary 9/3/2009

The September Issue (R.J. Cutler, 2009). A ridiculous subject that has somehow climbed its way into seriousness gets a full-on treatment here, as Cutler follows Anna Wintour around during the preparation of Vogue magazine’s 800-page annual blowout issue. Some of the personalities and rivalries are kind of fun, which makes the fashion world a fitting setting for a dumb reality show, even if it’s not always clear what else it’s good for. And on the other end of the social-importance spectrum, there’s….

The Baader-Meinhof Complex (Uli Edel, 2008). It’s one thing after another in this take-no-sides account of the notorious German militant group. Interesting and lively, but one wishes for a somewhat more caustic point-of-view on all aspects of the story. (full review 9/11)
