Movie Diary 12/2/2009

La Danse (Frederick Wiseman, 2009). Wiseman looks through the layers of an institution again (this time the Paris Opera Ballet), a job that affords some extended chances to photograph dance, which this movie does exceptionally well. For some of the finished performances, Wiseman is no longer the detached director of cinema verite but an actual dramatic filmmaker, since his decisions are inspired by the drama within that particular dance. He’s good at this. (full review 12/4)

Earth Days (Robert Stone, 2009). Doc about the counterculture that took up the environment as a cause, giving birth to Earth Day and turning Richard Nixon into an unlikely eco-president. (full review 12/11)
