Movie Diary 12/14/2009

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (Terry Gilliam, 2009). The “solution” to the death of Heath Ledger partway through filming is indeed an ingenious one; one could say that the substitution of different actors at crucial moments muddies this film, but the water was always going to be cloudy in the deep end of Gilliam’s swamp. Did You Hear About the Morgans? (Marc Lawrence, 2009). Is there anything deadlier than pauses for laughter built into a movie comedy? All that quiet time. And all those opportunities for Hugh Grant, all that actor’s energy, spent on this. (full review 12/18)

Flame and Citron (Ole Christian Madsen, 2008). Pretty good account of Danish resistance fighters whose jobs are more morally conflicted than the average resistance hero. Movie’s full of good faces, led by Mad Mikkelsen and Thure Lindhardt. (full review 12/18)
