Movie Diary 1/2/2010

The Awful Truth (Leo McCarey, 1937). Irene Dunne and Cary Grant doing rotten tricks on each other, reveling in the knowledge that they’re the only ones in on the same joke (rarely has the rest of the world outside the central couple seemed more like just a collection of suckers). This is the kind of concept that, when people do it today, everybody says it’s a lousy concept. But sometimes it works.

Adaptation (Spike Jonze, 2002). Hey, it holds up, including the part when Donald Kaufman’s influence takes over in the final half-hour.

Rear Window (Alfred Hitchcock, 1954). Hey, this one holds up, too.

The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond (Jodie Markell, 2009). A screenplay written by Tennessee Williams in the 1950s is revived here with what appears to be sincerity and an excellent young actress, Bryce Dallas Howard. Sincerity alone doesn’t go very far with Tennessee Williams. (full review 1/8)
