Movie Diary 2/2/2010

Alice in Wonderland (Tim Burton, 2010). There might be something interesting happening when the non-fantastical framing story goes like gangbusters and the Wonderland sequences run out of steam, but I’m not sure what. The first half of the movie, anyway, will remind you why you were ever a Burton fan. Nice work by Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Mia Wasikowska, and (vocally) Alan Rickman and Stephen Fry. Terribly Happy (Henrik Ruben Genz, 2008). Denmark’s submission for the Oscars is a dark comedy, or a comic darkety, about a policeman exiled from Copenhagen to a weird little village where something very sinister may be circling him. It’s not quite as good as it should be, but the locals are a suitable group of gargoyles. (full review 3/12)
