Movie Diary 5/3/2010

The Secret in Their Eyes (Juan Jose Campanella, 2009). The Oscar-winner that bested A Prophet and The White Ribbon in the Foreign-Language Film category – okay, maybe the mere mention of that fact loads the deck. Let’s not beat up on this movie just because the Academy voters once again went for a conventional, crowd-pleasing choice. But let’s beat up on it a little: the thing is far-fetched and too shadowed by the spirit of Girl with a Dragon Tattoo and that ilk, despite some good atmosphere, well-judged spots of humor, and the lived-in presence of Ricardo Darin and Soledad Villamil.
