Mesrine: Killer Instinct (Jean-Francois Richet, 2008). The first half of a crime epic about a real-life bad guy, played to the hilt by Vincent Cassel. Could’ve been derivative of Scorsese, but resists the temptation pretty well. (full review 8/20)

Maniac (Michael Carreras, 1963). Another Hammer thriller, and another weird one. Combines James Cain with Albert Lamorisse’s White Mane, shot on locations in the south of France including Les Baux. Sometimes you wonder what the people at Hammer were smoking, but it isn’t dull.
