Movie Diary 2/8/2011

The Housemaid (Im Sang-soo, 2010). Melodrama from the director of The President’s Last Bang, as a nanny is taken up in the machinations, sexual and otherwise, of her wealthy employers. Throttle out, which is probably the best way to play it. (full review 2/18)

The Match Factory Girl (Aki Kaurismäki, 1990). The loneliness of a young woman who works at a match factory and is surrounded by jerks; poker-faced revenge is served cold. Working up some prospects for a talk at the Frye Art Museum on the subject of fairy tales. This is a very slantways variation on the H.C. Andersen story, “The Little Match Girl,” but done with Kaurismäki’s mournful sarcasm.

X marks the spot at my other website, What a Feeling!, as we continue the original 1980s reviews with The Unheard Music, part of a week of music movies.
