This Is Not a Cabin (Weekly Links)

This Is Sort of a Film: The Cabin in the Woods

Links to reviews I wrote for the Herald this week, and etc.

This Is Not a Film. “Hands down, the singular movie of the year.”

The Cabin in the Woods. “A whole new realm of ‘Are you kidding me here?'”

Bully. “A harrowing movie.”

On KUOW’s “Weekday,” I talked with Steve Scher about two self-conscious openings that go meta on the movie you’re watching: The Cabin in the Woods and This Is Not a Film. The talk is archived here; the movie segment emerges at around the 21:30 mark.

Sunday afternoon I’ll be at the Frye Art Museum for a Magic Lantern event, in an onstage conversation with Susie J. Lee, whose exhibition, “Of Breath and Rain,” closes at the Frye that day. The topic is movies, and this artist’s thoughts on how film has affected her; it’s at 2 p.m., free, and you can learn more here.

At What a Feeling!, some Eighties movies to round off the week: vintage reviews of Dennis Hopper’s Colors and Sydney Pollack’s Out of Africa.
