Movie Diary 4/18/2012

The Turin Horse (Bela Tarr, co-directed by Alice Hranitzky, 2011). A purified statement, supposedly Tarr’s last. If so, he certainly nailed it on the farewell. In fact, I wonder whether the opening anecdote about Nietzsche withdrawing from the world after witnessing the beating of a horse is not a literal lead-in to this movie (which does indeed feature a horse) but Tarr’s way of framing his own disenchanted withdrawal. At What a Feeling!, a 1987 review of Susan Seidelman’s Making Mr. Right, which really did come close to getting it right.
