Movie 5/7/2012

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (Lorene Scafaria, 2012). Steve Carell in his sadsack mode, Keira Knightley kooky, and the literal end of the world (asteroid’s about to hit, folks) looming in the background. At least part of the movie is about which songs you’d choose for the finale. In which case, I have to give the edge to Don McKellar’s Last Night. (full review 6/?)

Elena (Andrey Zvyagintsev, 2011). The director of The Return with an even more intriguing offering, a very controlled number that manages to be about a great deal more than its noirish storyline. Showing at the Seattle International Film Festival this year. (full review 7/?)

Criss Cross (Robert Siodmak, 1949). One of the all-time film noir saps, played by Burt Lancaster, and one of the all-time film noir vamps, played by Yvonne de Carlo. Throw in Siodmak’s Germanic bent and you’ve got yourself an echt-noir.

This week at What a Feeling!, we survey the Eighties youth movie with a five-spot of vintage reviews. First up: Joel Schumacher’s St. Elmo’s Fire. Because the passion runs deep.
