Promised Land (Gus Van Sant, 2012). Difficult to fault the intentions and sentiments of the filmmakers, who include co-stars/co-writers Matt Damon and John Krasinski, in cooking up a movie about a Pennsylvania town and the looming specter of fracking. It’s a mild-mannered picture. (full review 12/28)

Amour (Michael Haneke, 2012). Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva are formidable in Haneke’s rigorous look at the end of lives. And rigorous is the way to do this movie, it turns out. (full review 1/?)

At What a Feeling!, hit the slammer with a vintage review of Peter Yates’s An Innocent Man.
