Strike (Sergei Eisenstein, 1925). Had not touched base with Eisie’s debut picture since writing an immortal college paper on the subject of water as a motif. Still a pretty exciting film, and a little crazy. Barely noticed the water this time.
Man with a Movie Camera (Dziga Vertov, 1929). This looked very different from the first time I saw it, but maybe it’s designed to do that. Or maybe it’s just Sight & Sound‘s recent Top Tenning of it that had me wary.
The Extraordinary Adventures of Mr. West in the Land of the Bolsheviks (Lev Kuleshov, 1924) and The House on Trubnaya (Boris Barnet, 1928). Comedies in the Soviet style: slapstick, social comment, propaganda mixed up. I’m watching all these Red movies for a talk at the Frye Art Museum coming up on Sunday.
At What a Feeling!, we have a Russian theme too, beginning with the glasnost-inflected Little Vera.
