Movie Diary 2/6/2013

Identity Thief (Seth Gordon, 2013). Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy are funny people, which is something you might need to keep reminding yourself about during this movie. (full review 2/8)

56 Up (Michael Apted, 2012). The series only gets more poignant as it goes along. So does the sense that these poor Britons caught by the camera every seven years are utterly, totally trapped by it. (full review 1/8)

Zvenigora (Alexander Dovzhenko, 1928). Dovzhenko’s film before Arsenal and Earth, and a truly weird, mystifying artifact. And somehow extremely funny.

At What a Feeling!, the Eighties play out to a Russian beat. First, a double review of Elem Klimov’s Rasputin and Liliana Cavani’s Beyond Obsession, then a take on Nikita Mikhalkov’s Dark Eyes.
