Movie Diary 7/17/2013

Le ciel est a vous (Jean Gremillon, 1944); Lumiere d’ete (Jean Gremillon, 1943). Two made during the Occupation, both high in melodrama and keen on location. Real beauts, and readable as political commentary or just sensitive storytelling. Saw them in 35 mm. (Lumiere restored) at the National Film Theatre, which must make lots of money from its bars. I wish I could go here all the time.
