Movie Diary 8/1/2013

Austenland (Jerusha Hess, 2013). The filmmaker is the spouse of Napoleon Dynamite‘s director. Funny how that movie could be so exact and precise in its comic set-ups and this movie so casual. But kudos for allowing Jennifer Coolidge the chance to run untethered. (full review 8/23)

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (Thor Freudenthal, 2013). These continue. (full review 8/7)

True Grit (Henry Hathaway, 1969). Jeff Bridges was very good in the remake, but there are certain things he can’t be – so, good to see this again.

The Horse Soldiers (John Ford, 1959). A Civil War movie with a truly unusual and-then-this-happens, non-arc, non-triumphal structure. It even keeps doing that after the film ends, in a way.
