Movie Diary 9/11/2013

Insidious Chapter 2 (James Wan, 2013). The first half conjures up some of the good stuff from Chapter One, although eventually there’s a lot of explanation that needs to be covered. Kudos to Wan for recognizing how terrifying Patrick Wilson’s smile can be.

The Patience Stone (Atiq Rahimi, 2012). The movie might talk a little too much, but then again it’s about the opportunity to talk after a lifetime of being silenced. And perhaps it’s also to do with how speaking religious tenets out loud goes a long way to exposing their cruelty and absurdity. Golshifteh Farahani gives an extraordinary performance as a young wife whose husband lies in a coma while some kind of Muslim civil war wages in her neighborhood. Rahimi adapted his own novel with help from Jean-Claude Carrière, the screenwriter who has now worked with everyone. (full review 9/20)
