Movie Diary 10/3/2013

Wadjda (Haifaa Al Mansour, 2013). In the midst of the crackpot gender politics of Saudi Arabia, a little girl wants a bicycle. The result is a pretty wonderful movie (and probably the foreign-language Oscar winner). In this case, please take not-a-dry-eye-in-the-house warnings seriously. (full review 10/18)

The Fifth Estate (Bill Condon, 2013). Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange, and Daniel Brühl as right-hand-man Daniel Domscheit-Berg, running through a series of WikiLeaks’s greatest hits. Fewer “cutting edge” (read: dated) graphics might’ve been a blessing here. (full review 10/18)
