Movie Diary 10/8/2013

Dallas Buyers Club (Jean-Marc Vallée, 2013) and We Are What We Are (Jim Mickle, 2013). Strange double feature on Monday. Two films about illness, but they take very different forms. Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto deserve their kudos for the former; the latter is hypnotic and eventually berserk – and it has Michael Parks. (full reviews 11/8 and 10/11)

Romeo and Juliet (Carlo Carlei, 2013). You know, the story really rips along. The leads are very young, which makes for a fitting contrast in life wisdom and actorly expertise with the likes of Paul Giamatti and Lesley Manville (Friar and Nurse, respectively). (full review 10/11)

Escape from Tomorrow (Randy Moore, 2013). This is the movie shot at Disney parks without permits. Although that implies a certain kind of movie, this is not necessarily that kind of movie, and it’s all the better for that. What it is is pretty unnerving, though. (full review 10/11)
