Movie Diary 11/6/2013

Blue is the Warmest Color (Abdellatif Kechiche, 2013). First observation is how profoundly this movie has been ill-served by everybody (reviewers, filmmakers, media hacks) focusing on the sex scenes. It is a real movie – like it or fault it, but give it its due. As in Kechiche’s exhilarating Secret of the Grain, you get the sense of a filmmaker with a strong vision who nevertheless is engaged on an exciting search. Eloquent, but maybe sometimes inarticulate, too. (full review 11/22)

Delivery Man (Ken Scott, 2013). Scott re-made his own French-Canadian film Starbuck as this Vince Vaughn vehicle, and it’s an extremely close remake – although Vaughn does bring his own je ne sais quoi. (full review 11/22)
