Movie Diary 12/4/2013

Saving Mr. Banks (John Lee Hancock, 2013). Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks – that is a good argument right there. It’s about the making of Mary Poppins, with its sourpuss author on the Disney lot. (full review 12/13)

The Act of Killing (Joshua Oppenheimer, 2013). Just in case you felt a little short in the feeling-utterly-disgusted-by-the-state-of-humanity department, by all means look in on this strange and shocking film, in which Oppenheimer gets the murderers of the mid-1960s Indonesian death squads to re-create their acts as film drama. Fair to say there hasn’t been a movie exactly like this one.
