Movie Diary 12/5/2013

August: Osage County (John Wells, 2013). Do you ever marvel at what wins the Pulitzer Prize for drama? It’s unfair to judge the movie adaptation on that point, I suppose, but sheesh. Big-time cast (Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts lead the way), and all that. (full review 12/25)

Europa Report (Sebastián Cordero, 2013). Wanted to catch up with this limited-scale sci-fi outing, in which a crew lands on a moon of Jupiter and finds something extremely odd going on there. A tad caught between found-footage requirements and a lack of actual plot material, the film nevertheless gets decent claustrophobia going.

Tim’s Vermeer (Teller, 2013). A tech whiz and inventor is convinced that Vermeer used a combination of camera obscura and mirror to create his paintings, and sets about to prove it. His pals Penn and Teller are along to document the obsessive process. Interesting idea, but it would be good to delve a bit more into what kind of kook would devote himself to this.
