Movie Diary 1/21/2014

Backstairs (Leopold Jessner,1921). Housemaid Henny Porten has a lover (William Dieterle), but in his absence the postman  (Fritz Kortner) who lives downstairs secretly loves her. I had seen this one before, but this time it looked even more concentrated and pure, a blend of German strains of Expressionism and the chamber film. Did I mention I’m doing a program on images of women in German cinema in the 1920s on Sunday? Details here.
