Gimme Best Raze (Weekly Links)

Brendan Fraser, Vanessa Hudgens: Gimme Shelter

Brendan Fraser, Vanessa Hudgens: Gimme Shelter

Links to reviews I wrote this week for the Herald and Seattle Weekly, and etc.

Gimme Shelter. “A dark ball of coiled anger and inchoate acting-out.”

The Best Offer. “A pleasant enough collision of arty eye-candy (pretty locations, secrets rooms lined with painted masterpieces) and trash.”

American Promise. “It might not be a great idea to subject your own child to the distorting lens of the documentary camera.”

Raze. “Would not pass muster on the second half of a 1970s drive-in bill.”

Sunday, Jan. 26, I’ll be talking about “Virgins, Hausfraus, and Fallen Angels: Images of Women in Early German Film,” a free talk in the Magic Lantern series at the Frye Art Museum. We’ll look at big stars of the era such as Henny Porten and Asta Nielsen (about whom Apollinaire wrote, “She is Everything! She is the drunkard’s vision and the lonely man’s dream”), check the duality of Brigitte Helm in Metropolis, and lead up to the arrival of Marlene Dietrich. We begin at 2 p.m.; more info here.

We used to do a show on the radio. Now we do a podcast. Listen in on Steve Scher and me roaming through the aisles of Scarecrow Video and thinking about the future of movie-delivery systems, in a session of The Overlook. That one’s here. Or you can click this:
