Movie Diary 3/18/2014

Broadway (Paul Fejos, 1929). Very early-sound musical, recently revived by the Criterion Collection. Allegedly snappy scenes of showgirls and gangsters alternate with dizzying crane shots in a mob nightclub. Merna Kennedy, future wife of Busby Berkeley and former leading lady of Charlie Chaplin, has one of the starring parts.

Exiled (Johnnie To, 2006). Super-fun account of gangsters in Macao, as they balance professional obligations with personal loyalties. Didn’t quite hold up on the small screen as well as it had on the big, but still a good one.
