Movie Diary 5/27/2014

A Million Ways to Die in the West (Seth MacFarlane, 2014). So it’s not a spoof of Westerns, but just a silly movie set in the West. Fair enough. MacFarlane sure falls in love with certain jokes, which would be forgivable if more of them were better. (full review 5/30)

Sonatine (Takeshi Kitano, 1993). A very particular sort of yakuza movie, featuring the director’s own deadpan presence. Already, Takeshi Kitano was slipping parody elements into his gangster stuff, as though he knew no sane person could take this stuff seriously anymore.
