Movie Diary 6/17/2014

Jersey Boys (Clint Eastwood, 2014). A calm approach to the musical biopic – the subject here being Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, if you didn’t know. For the genre, this is remarkably angst-free. (full review 6/20)

Obvious Child (Gillian Robespierre, 2014). Comedian Jenny Slate should become a star out of this, an unexpected-pregnancy movie that doesn’t cop out. (full review 6/20)

The Dance of Reality (Alejandro Jodorowsky, 2013). The week’s other opening from an octogenarian filmmaker is the El Topo director’s first movie in years. The amazing thing here is that it’s pretty good – a certain amount of narrative cohesion (but not too much), gaudy grotesquerie, and a main character who sings all her dialogue as opera.
