Mia Wasikowska, Crimson Peak

Links to my reviews published this week in the Herald and Seattle Weekly, and etc.

Bridge of Spies. “All snowy East Berlin alleys and tense meetings in unheated rooms – exactly Spielberg’s cup of borscht.” (In case of Herald paywall, Weekly link here.)

The Forbidden Room. “Gleeful mishmash.” (Weekly link here.)

Mississippi Grind. “Mendelsohn is one of the most exciting people on screen these days.” (Weekly link here.)

Beasts of No Nation. “An unforgettable portrait of seduction and terror.”

Crimson Peak. “Crazy and fun at times, but basically hollow.”

Tuesday Oct. 20 at 5:30 I’ll be at the Renton History Museum to present “Alien Encounters: Sci-Fi Movies and the Cold War Culture of the 1950s,” a look at how flying saucer films reflected the anxieties of the atomic age. The talk is free with regular museum admission; more info here.

Saturday Oct. 24 at 2 pm I’ll be at Bellevue Library to present “Before Ultron: Artificial Intelligence in the Movies,” a look at the most memorable manifestations of A.I. in film history, from the malfunctioning HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey to the perfect companion in Her. The talk is free; more info here.
