Movie Diary 10/21/2015

Truth (James Vanderbilt, 2015). A tale of the scandal that brought down Dan Rather, adapted from the memoir by 60 Minutes producer Mary Mapes. Amid the bombast, Cate Blanchett survives, and Robert Redford is interesting, if not ideal, as Rather. But what’s amazing is that nobody has gotten the real story (what was W.’s Vietnam-era service record?) in the decade since. Maybe this movie will move the needle on that, which would justify its existence.

Rosenwald (Aviva Kempner, 2015). Documentary portrait of Julius Rosenwald, a remarkable self-made millionaire whose philanthropy had very specific effects on African America. A wonderful story, from the director of The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg. (full review 10/30)
