Movie Diary 11/9/3015

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (Christopher McQuarrie, 2015). It can be said that along with perfecting the art of hanging off a moving airplane, Tom Cruise has honed the can-you-believe-this-is-happening-here gesture. Which he is required to do many times in this spiralingly preposterous scenario.

Grandma (Paul Weitz, 2015). The movie has a lot in its favor just by virtue of letting Lily Tomlin run for the length of a feature. And if it’s not earth-shaking overall (coming after Obvious Child, it loses some timeliness as a risky comedy of abortion), it builds up some right-minded pleasantness.
