Movie Diary 11/30/2015

Chi-Raq (Spike Lee, 2015). Although I am not one of the director’s big fans, I will say that I’d rather see Lee doing this kind of no-holds-barred hectoring diatribe than serving as a studio director-for-hire. It’s pretty nuts. (full review 12/4)

Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief (Alex Gibney, 2015). Even if you’ve read up on the ministry spawned by L. Ron Hubbard, actually seeing some of this stuff will be flabbergasting. The beliefs may be as daffy as those found in any religion, but the tactics are strictly from another planet.

Janis: Little Girl Blue (Amy Berg, 2015). A decent, straight-ahead docu-bio of Janis Joplin, with some strong footage and an intensely sympathetic approach. (full review 12/4)
