Movie Diary 12/3/2015

Jauja (Lisandro Alonso, 2014). A day of catching up to 2015 releases. Alonso has a movie star for the first time (Viggo Mortensen), but he’s still making his kind of picture. I’m not sure there’s a single ordinary landscape in this entire film.

The Diary of a Teenage Girl (Marielle Heller, 2015). A pretty unflinching directing debut, with no sugarcoating involved. Refreshing to see a grown-up look at teendom, without the usual amnesia.

Irrational Man (Woody Allen, 2015). The subject has lots of possibilities, but the script itself feels more first-draftish than Allen’s recent good run. Didn’t buy Joaquin Phoenix – in casting or performance – as the depressed philosophy professor; despite the efforts of Emma Stone and Parker Posey, it’s hard for the movie to gain traction.
