Movie Diary 12/9/2015

Son of Saul (Laszlo Nemes, 2015). A harrowing Holocaust film that barely leaves the immediate vicinity of its shocked protagonist’s head and shoulders. The narrow perspective is appropriate and terrifying.

While We’re Young (Noah Baumbach, 2015). A funny one from Baumbach, about fortysomethings Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts feeling their age, and the bewildering manners and mores of young people these days.

Bone Tomahawk (S. Craig Zahler, 2015). A crazed horror western, with a superb quartet of searchers (Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Richard Jenkins, Matthew Fox) on a mission. Its genre trappings and gory moments may relegate it to sideline status, but this is a smart, strong movie.
