Youth (Paolo Sorrentino, 2015). Not being one of those people who went ga-ga over Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty, I came into this one without grand expectations. It offers more visual sumptuousness, and mostly it operates on the surface. But there’s some nice Euro-mood, and Michael Caine and Rachel Weisz in classy form, and some of the coolest eyeglasses you’ll ever see.
Slow West (John Maclean, 2015). Catching up in a good year for Westerns. Probably too self-conscious to take flight, this tidy ensemble picture has many pleasures along the way.
