Movie Diary 6/2/2016

Sand Storm (Elite Zexer, 2016). The ancient and the modern collide in a tribal community within Israel, given a straightforward but fervent treatment. This kind of tale might not be new but Zexer’s hand is steady, and the actors are stirring. Shows at Seattle International Film Festival.

Complete Unknown (Joshua Marston, 2016). Lots of initial intrigue from Maria Full of Grace director Marston: Rachel Weisz is a lifelong chameleon, flitting from identity to identity; Michael Shannon spots her at a dinner party and seems to sense something awry. The film continues on from there, and brings in many frogs – Weisz’s latest job has something to do with amphibian wrangling.
