Movie Diary 4/5/2017

Edge of the City (Martin Ritt, 1957). Brooding longshoreman John Cassavetes is taken under the wing of nice guy Sidney Poitier, in a movie that does some heavy borrowing from On the Waterfront and the ghost of James Dean. Some nice moments in the domestic scenes with Poitier and Ruby Dee, and in the sketch of male friendship, but the contrivances hurt it.
