Movie Diary 5/3/2017

Afterimage (Andrzej Wajda, 2016). The final film of the great Polish director, made when he was 90. It’s an exceptionally strong swan song, and unequivocal in its depiction of the Communist authorities in Poland and their approach to art. (screens in the upcoming Seattle International Film Festival)

The Dinner (Oren Moverman, 2017). The director of Rampart and The Messenger brings his hothouse style to a very complicatedly-told moral tale; it unwinds when two couples meet for a dinner to hash things out. The story might bloom if rendered with subtlety, but that is not Moverman’s strong suit. Good cast: Richard Gere, Steve Coogan (unexpectedly in the biggest role), Laura Linney, Rebecca Hall. (full review 5/5)
