Movie Diary 11/21/2017

Wonder Wheel (Woody Allen, 2017). The contributions of Kate Winslet and Vittorio Storaro considerably amplify the appeal of this Allen product, which is set in the 1950s on Coney Island. As so often, one wishes Allen broke a little more into a sweat over it all. (full review 12/8)

Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool (Paul McGuigan, 2017). Based on the memoir of a late-in-life lover of Gloria Grahame (late in her life, that is, not his). Grahame gets a fine, thoughtful performance by Annette Bening, which explains the film’s release during awards season; but Jamie Bell is equally good as the young actor who takes up with Grahame and sweetly cares for her.
