Black Panther (Ryan Coogler, 2018). We know what it represents – but is it any good? Coogler does great things in the world-building department, creating a sci-fi-ish African nation, and the warrior women are mighty to behold. A Fantastic Woman (Sebastián Lelio, 2017). One of the Oscar-nominated foreign-language films, from the director of the terrific Gloria (2013). I’m not saying this would have been on my Ten Best list if I’d seen it earlier, but it would have been close. Daniela Vega’s held-back performance is a genuinely special turn, albeit not showy enough for Oscar voters. (full review 2/23)
