Movie Diary 4/2/2018

Ready Player One (Steven Spielberg, 2018). A big blockbuster-sized fantasy and an odd, conflicted movie. There’s a sequence, in which the VR voyagers step into a certain Kubrick film, that automatically joins the list of all-time eye-benders. Mark Rylance plays a Steve Jobsian visionary-weirdo, and his performance suggests that Mark Rylance may know more about people than anyone else alive.

Blockers (Kay Cannon, 2018). Just funny enough to get the job done, even with the obligatory raunch. Brilliantly cast, at every level. Very good with seemingly improvised asides.
