Movie Diary 6/19/2018

Berlin-Schönhauser Corner (Gerhard Klein, 1957). A youth-in-turmoil film from East Berlin, with street-level realness plus a bit of propaganda about the dangers of venturing into West Berlin. The main rebel without a cause is played by Ekkehard Schall, who had a big stage career, was Bertolt Brecht’s son-in-law, and played the dayglo-haired planetary emperor in the East German sci-fi film In the Dust of the Stars. I wouldn’t say this one has aged as well as some of the other DEFA films from the East, but you can see how it would have meant a lot at the time.
