The Nun (La Religieuse, Jacques Rivette, 1966). A very formal film, stern in its look but empathetic in its texture – it starts off seeming like a Bresson movie (especially in the stark sound design) but also veers into Buñuel territory. Anna Karina plays the nun forced into the monastery against her will, a soldier in a lifelong battle to get out. Frequently the classical style breaks apart for a weird cut or the clanging mod musical score. It’s compelling, and Karina gives a touching performance. Based on Diderot’s novel.
