Movie Diary 10/15/2018

River Beat (Guy Green, 1954). Crime picture set on the waterfront, where a Thames policeman (John Bentley) tries to get a romance going with a visitor who works on an ocean liner. She is Phyllis Kirk, whose enjoyable repartee with Bentley makes the movie worth watching. There’s something to do with diamond smuggling as well. Robert Ayres plays the American ship captain. A few scenes of people drinking beer out of tin mugs. First directing job for Oscar-winning cinematographer Guy Green (A Patch of Blue), who made some intelligent/ambitious pictures; this one has some interesting moments, mostly confined to behavior.
