Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Ryan Reynolds as Poke-avatar: Pokemon: Detective Pikachu (Warner Bros. Pictures)

Links to my reviews published this week in the Herald, and etc.

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu. “Tedious. But it’s enough to sustain a universe until next time, which is all that’s required.”

The Hustle. “Is it too much to ask that a film with glamorous people set on the Riviera might actually look good?”

Tolkien. “The movie doesn’t nail its attempts to depict how hobbits and wizards and elves were born from Tolkien’s youth, but it does create an appealing portrait of a brainy misfit.”

Join a session of Scarecrow Academy on Saturday, May 11, at 1 p.m., as we consider the bop prosody of the beat-era classics Pull My Daisy (the 30-minute goof written and narrated by Jack Kerouac and featuring Allen Ginsburg et al.) and Roger Corman’s A Bucket of Blood. The event is free.

For Scarecrow’s blog, I contribute a Seasoned Ticket entry that looks back at two Zhang Yimou films, Hero and House of Flying Daggers. Zhang’s new one, Shadow, opens at the Grand Illusion this week. Read that here.
