Movie Diary 5/12/2019

The Nightingale (Jennifer Kent, 2018). From the director of The Babadook. This is a blunt-force-trauma movie, full of intense brutality and sometimes very broad villainy. I guess in another era I might find the film overbaked and simply too much, but – well, you know what era we live in. Kent’s outrage seems fully earned. (Screens at the Seattle International Film Festival.)

A Bucket of Blood (Roger Corman, 1959). The thing that struck me this time was how much Corman really gets behind the anguished-artist stuff, and how generally sharp the movie looks, despite budget issues. Of course it’s also very kooky. Long live Dick Miller.
